Beverly Johnson, the pioneer

Beverly Johnson is a pioneer in the fashion world. She is the first African American model to grace the cover of Vogue in 1974 and the French Elle in 1975.
After her transcendent covers, fashion magazines started featuring African American models. Thus, Beverly Johnson is, to this day, a true pioneer and trailblazer for African American women's rights.

The famous 1974 Vogue cover that opened the doors for change. Beverly Johnson looked absolutely spectacular.

Beverly Johnson, now 61, grew up in the suburbs of New York and attended Northeastern University to study political science. Until she took part in a casting for Glamour Magazine to try her luck at modeling.
And as far as cliches go... the rest is history. Beverly became one of the first supermodels and was named by The NY Times, as one of the 20th century's most influential people in the fashion world.

Currently she stars in her own reality TV show "Beverly's Full House" -on Oprah's OWN channel- and has been awarded several recognitions for her role as a female African American pioneer.

What do you think of Beverly Johnson's role as a trailblazer?
I love seeing vintage Vogue/Elle pictures, and specially Beverly's. She is such an important icon in fashion.

Thank you for reading,

Always,

Francesca
